PRESS RELEASE: Productions Honouring Simone, Joplin & Callas

Nina Simone, Janis Joplin and Maria Callas

Executive Director T.J. Armand announced that three special performances are scheduled to honour three legendary women of the performing arts at the 44th annual Bermuda Festival.

Mr. Armand said: “In keeping with our Empowerment of Women theme, I’m happy to announce that award-winning playwright Christina Ham’s explosive play with music, Nina Simone – Four Women, will be directed by Marcus Gardley [The House That Will Not Stand], starring Broadway veteran Harriett D. Foy [Amazing Grace] as Nina Simone.

“We will also feature a tribute concert performed by Tony Award-nominee for Best Actress for her role as Janis Joplin in the Broadway production of “A Night with Janis Joplin”: Mary Bridget Davies!

“Furthermore, we’ve recently added Terence McNally’s 1996 Tony Award-winner for Best Play: Master Class to our lineup. The play is based on a fictional depiction of opera diva Maria Callas holding a workshop with students.

“Along with living legends like Chaka Khan and The Manhattan Transfer, the 44th Annual Bermuda Festival will continue to feature inspiring performances from local performers who have made a significant impact in Bermuda’s cultural landscape.”

Performance dates, casting and venues will be announced soon. 44th Annual Bermuda Festival will take place between January 19th through March 9th, 2019.
